Created as a site specific video installation for the Vitrine Space at Platform Contemporary Art Spaces, Carousel Ballet was Amato’s second exhibition showcasing works inspired by the carousel. The Vitrine space is an art deco shop window located in the subway in Melbourne, Australia. It was turned over to become a public art space when the owner of the bookstore who had occupied the space for a very long time, passed away.
Carousel Ballet uses footage Amato captured whilst visiting the Los Angeles Griffith Park carousel where it is said that Walt Disney was inspired to create Disneyland. The video is projected onto the mirrored back wall of the window space and captures the mechanical movements of one of the figurines attached to the band organ accompanying the carousel. The cupid rings it’s bell in sync with carousel music that can be heard whilst standing at the Vitrine’s window.
