Description

Amato’s paintings require the action of her body and are an extension of her material investigation into dough. They are records of an intimate act between surfaces (the surface of her body & that of the paper) which is then subjected to interference. Paint is poured upon the papers surface to interact with the marks left behind by her body’s past presence, disrupting, fragmenting and further distorting the evidence of an intimate act. Opposing relations between object/subject, figure/ground within the tactile medium of paint and paper result in conceptions of the body and surrounded in themes such as strangeness/foreignness, intimacy and vulnerability, self and Other, presence and absence, and horror/desire.
